Dog Temperament: Energy Level

When we talk about temperament we are talking about energy levels. Your dogs temperament should complement your personality. This is one case where oppsoites do not attract. It is best not to pick a dog breed that is highly energetic if you’re a couch potato who likes to sit on the couch with your pink bunny slippers while watching ‘Dancing With The Stars”.

If you want a dog that will follow you everywhere around the house, who will run with you while you train for the Chicago marathon and who is always ready for a game of fetch you should consider a dog breed that always has a lot of energy, instead of one of the sluggish breeds.

Generally, dogs that are low energy are considered to be in the category of ‘Green Light’ or easy to live with types of dog personality. Some breeds that naturally fall into the Green Light division due to their energy level are:

  • Mastiffs (English, French, Italian, Spanish)
  • Bull Mastiffs
  • Newfoundlands
  • American Cocker Spaniel
  • English Bulldog
  • American Bulldog
  • Clumber Spaniel
  • Sussex Spaniel
  • Boston Terrier
  • Bassett Hound
  • Pug
  • Greyhounds
  • Whippet
