Obedience Training
Obedience Training is one of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself. Obedience training will not solve dog behavior problems that are caused by lack of leadership, improper energy or unbalanced lifestyle, but obedience training is a good place to start out on a new leaf.
Dog obedience training is an artificial way to create an attitude of respect and appreciation in the dog towards people. Dog obedience training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want her to do or not do at any particular time.
Dogs are social animals and without proper psychological imprinting, they will behave like the wolf does in the wild. They will poop in your house, chew your belongings, chase your children, bark excessively, steal your food, fight other dogs and even bite you—just like they would in the wild. Without the proper psychological imprinting your dog will act like the free, wild child of the woods that he is-genetically.
Nearly all dog behavior problems that dog lovers complain about are perfectly normal canine activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing due to a lack of leadership, absent psychological imprinting and inadequate dog obedience training. The key to preventing behavior problems is teaching the dog to redirect his natural behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the urban setting.
Obedience training is one way to establish the social hierarchy-but without proper psychological imprinting the dog will still misbehave. Psychological imprinting establishes your social rank to your dog in a way that he genetically understands. There are many very obedient dogs-some with advanced titles in obedience or protection that can’t live with people. On occasion, it may be necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the pack by using extreme measures such as the so-called alpha roll-over as demonstrated by Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer from National Geographic.
Obedience training is a good place to start if you do not have the money for a professional trainer to come to your home and give your expert guidance or for a dog boot camp.
