The oldest type of dog training collar is called the choke chain,  a correction collar, a slip chain, a training chain, a Woodhouse collar or a Volhard choke. These collars all work by the same principal when one end of the collar is pulled the entire collar constricts around the dog’s neck (mimicking a corrective bite).

Basically, this collar is a length or chain or fabric with two round rings at the end. A properly fitted choke chain is very important in training.  There are two items that you should keep in mind when your choose your training collar the length and the weight of the chain.

In terms of length, it should be the size of the dogs neck plus 2 inches. If your choke chain goes over your dogs head a little snug that’s alright because most breed of dogs have a larger head than neck.

In terms of chain weight, the lighter the chain the quicker the release. Thus the more humane and effective the collar will be in training your dog. Many people mistakenly assume that the heavy the link, the more effective the collar-this is untrue.

Now to put the choke chain on right drop the chain through either ring and make the letter P of the alphabet. Now with you looking at the letter P slip it over your dogs head. With your dog on your left hand side if you pop up on the leash and release- the choke chain should also release the tension on the dogs neck.
